North Cascades Glacier Retreat

By Mark Straub

Glacier Facts

-A glacier will form or advance if the yearly snowfall exceeds the yearly melting. A glacier will retreat if the yearly melting exceeds the yearly snowfall.

-Temperatures have risen drastically in recent years, causing the retreat of all glaciers in the North Cascades. Some notable examples are the Paradise Glacier on Mt. Rainier, which is now almost nonexistent, and the South Cascade Glacier next to Sentinel ...

Sahale Mountain Over View: Located in the Heart of the North Cascades and is located in between the Cascade Valley and the Stehiken Valley. According to Google Earth, the Summit is 8701 feet above sea level. Sahale Peak is located in the Boston Basin area in the North Cascades. Boston Basin is very similar to the alps in terms of weather and quality of alpine climbing. The lower elevation, with peaks in the eight to nine thousand foot range does translate to weather conditions and a shorter climbing ...

Vesper Peak is east of Granite Falls and is near Silverton. The road getting there is friendly and a northwest forest pass is required. The trail starts out gentle and easy through the woods, a few creeks and a river (careful crossing it). There is an orange tag that represents the trail to cross the river. The first time I went there I took a wrong way and went on a primitive trail to Lewis Peak. After the river the trail starts to switch back a few times to a strait away, then you get to a ...

Hannegan Peak is a hike well worth the trip. It is about 200 miles from Seattle and is about 10 miles round trip to the summit. The summit is about 6200ft. high and you start out at 2900ft. which makes your elevation gain about 3400 feet. The hike is moderate and is beautiful on a nice day, When I went there on a smoggy day the view was still very good. If you are out of shape and don't quite feel like going to the summit then you can go to the pass which is 3.5 miles one way. The view at the ...

Mount Pilchuck: The first Mountain I have ever climbed! This was done in the month of February of 2005 and was'nt too dangerous, because the snow that year was unusually little. Summited at sunset, which was amazing! I summited it four times.

Mount Dickerman: I summited this one twice, each time around sunset, during May 2005, it was also an amzing time, although I hiked this mountain many times unsuccessfuly with good photos.

Thats why it is and for a long time will remain my Special Mountain! I will explain each of the experiences of when I went to Cascade Pass or Sahale Mountain which is basicly the same hike but right next to each other and to access Sahale, you must first go up to Cascade Pass. The first time I ever went to Cascade Pass, I did'nt even get to the parking lot and took place in ...

Photo Description: Water falls, the down stream of water contributes to rivers which gives animals and plants water to drink. Water is one of the most important components of life, without it, our planet could not contain life. It makes a lovely noise as you are hiking through the mountains, if you think walking through a forest in spring is quiet, think again. There ...

Has anyone been to Cascade Pass? It is a wonderful place!

Located in the Heart of the North Cascades and is located in between the Cascade Valley and the Stehiken Valley. The hike is 3.8 miles to the pass which has a easy difficult unless you go in snow. Views at the Parking lot are good but when you go up to Cascade Pass, you are rewarded with some of the best scenery that Washington has to offer.
The hike takes you to the top of a 5,723 foot summit with a 360 degree view. The hike is about 4.6 miles one way, making it 9.2 miles round trip. The hike is strenuous and is not recommended to beginner hikers in November-May because of the high amount of snow. From the summit you can see Glacier Peak, Vesper Peak, Del Campo Peak, Mt. Pilchuck, Three Fingers, White Horse, Sloan Peak, and Mt. Pugh.

Located in North Bend, Washington, Mt. Si is 4,167 feet high. The trailhead starts at 700 feet and progresses gradually upward through a forest, eventually reaching a boulder field for the last arm of the hike. The Haystack (the true summit) is 300 feet tall and is a Class 3 scramble. Mt. Si is well known for a diverse ecosystem and a conditioning hike. The trail is 4 miles long one way.

This hike is 3 miles to the Summit and is a easy day hike with wonderful views of the Mountain Loop Highway. The parking lot starts out at about an elevation of 3,200 feet and the summit is 5,324 feet. Recommended May-October, due to heavy amounts of snow, it can be done in winter but can in ways be more treterous and much more difficult and yu might have to walk to the parking lot which is the reason I think it is best done in spring. From the summit you can see Three Fingers, Glacier Peak, ...
